In Psalms chapter seventy-eight Asaph said, “Give ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth”, and in chapter seventy-eight and verse two of Psalms Asaph said, “I will open my mouth in a parable” where we read,
I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:
The verse begins, “I will open my mouth in a parable:” Asaph began with the words, “I will open my mouth” or “I, Asaph, shall loosen, ungird, unstop or open wide my, Asaph's, orifice in his face used for drinking, eating and speaking” “in a parable” which means “by the use of a proverbial saying, aphorism, similitude or sentences of ethical wisdom”. Asaph said he would loosen his mouth to share proverbial and ethical wisdom.
The verse goes on to say, “I will utter dark sayings of old:” Asaph continued with the words, “I will utter” or “I, Asaph, shall declare, proclaim and speak” “dark sayings of old” which means “riddles, difficult questions, enigmatic sayings or perplexing questions from antiquity, aforetime and earliest time”. Asaph determined to speak about perplexing questions from earliest time.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn that Asaph's purpose within this Psalm is to recall proverbial sayings that are from the past. We shall see what he discloses in our future verses, but for now let us be reminded that we too should refer to our past when we are considering the things of God. God loves us, and He has been at work in our lives since before we were born. He wants to be in a personal relationship with us through His Son Jesus whom He sent into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we believe and trust in Jesus as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and remind us over and over again about His faithfulness and commitment to save and rescue us.
Next time Asaph shares how the dark sayings are ones, “which we have heard and known”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
