Like Oreb and Zeeb - Psalms 83:11

In Psalms chapter eighty three Asaph spoke of the enemies of Israel and said, “Do unto them as unto the Midianites; as to Sisera, as to Jabin, at the brook of Kison: Which perished at Endor: they became as dung for the earth”, and in chapter eighty three and verse eleven of Psalms Asaph said, “make their nobles like Oreb … and Zeeb” where we read,

Make their nobles like Oreb, and like Zeeb: yes, all their princes as Zebah, and as Zalmunna:

The verse begins, Make their nobles like Oreb, and like Zeeb: Asaph began with the words, “make their nobles” or “put, set, constitute, fix and set the mind of the generous and magnanimous ones belonging to their, the enemies of Jehovah God and the people of Israel” “like Oreb” which means “similar to Oreb whose name means raven and was one of the chieftains of the Midianite army defeated by Gideon ”, “and like Zeeb” or “and similar to Zeeb whose name means wolf and was one of the two princes of Midian mentioned in the conquest; brought to bay in a winepress” (See Judges 7:25; 8:12-20). Asaph appealed to Jehovah God to contend with the chieftains of His enemies in a similar manner that He judged “Oreb and Zeeb”.

The verse goes on to say, yes, all their princes as Zebah, and as Zalmunna: Asaph continued with the words, “yes, all their princes” or “even so and indeed to each, every, the whole and everyone of the dukes, principals and anointed ones belonging to the people of Israel” “as Zebah” which means “like unto Zebah whose name means deprived of protection”, “and as Zalmunna” or “and like unto Zalmunna whose name means deprived of protection and was a Midianite king slain by Gideon”. Asaph referred to “Zebah and Zalmunna” whom Jehovah God eliminated through Gideon.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how Asaph wanted Jehovah God to act upon His and the people of Israel's current hating adversaries in a similar manner to the ways He dealt with “Oreb, Zeeb, Zebah and Zalmunna”. God is able to eliminate and annihilate anyone He desires, however, that is not His nature. He wants to save people, and this is why He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins and grant us everlasting life, and we can count on Him to bring vengeance upon those who are His enemies and ours.

Next time Asaph shares how the enemies of Israel say, “Let us take to ourselves the houses of God in possession”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
