Lachish Obtains Help from Gezer - Joshua 10:33

In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “the LORD delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, which took it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah”, and in chapter ten and verse thirty-three of the book of Joshua, we learn how, “Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish” where we read,

Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish;

and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.

The verse reads, “Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish;” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “then Horam” which means “at that time Horam whose name means exalted” “king of Gezer” or “the royal ruler belonging to Gezer or Gazer whose name means ‘portion’ and was  a Levitical city on the border of Ephraim” “came up to help Lachish” which means “rose and ascended to give aid and assistance to Lachish whose name means ‘invincible’ and was a city lying south of Jerusalem on the borders of Simeon and which belonged to the Amorites until conquered by Joshua and allotted to Judah”. Joshua or the writer shared how “Horam” who was the royal ruler in the city of “Gezer” arose to give assistance to “Lachish”

The verse goes on to say, “and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.” Joshua or the writer continued with the words, “and Joshua”  whose name means “Jehovah is salvation” “smote him” or “struck, hit, beat and killed him, Horam” “and his people” which means “and his, Horam’s, human beings”, “until he had left him none remaining” or “till such time as he, Joshua, did not allow or permit anyone who belonged to Horam to survive, be left over, behind or alive”. Joshua or the writer shared his “Joshua” struck and killed “Horam” that his “people” to the point that not one of them survived.

When we think through the words in this verse, we see how Jehovah God worked on behalf of the people of Israel once again in the promise land. This time, “Horam”, who was the royal ruler of Gezer, came to give aid to the city of “Lachish”. At least that’s what he thought, but he was actually coming to “Joshua” so Jehovah God could defeat him and his “people”. God is able to handle any hating foe who rises up against His people “Israel”, and because He loves “Israel”, He provides for and protects them. God desires this type of relationship with every person through His Son Jesus who came into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days. When we humble ourselves, repent of our sins and ask Him to come into our lives as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and equip us with His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and give us provision and protection throughout our lives on earth and in His Heavenly dwelling place above.

Next time we learn, “from Lachish Joshua passed unto Eglon”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
