In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, unto Lachish, and encamped against it, and fought against it”, and in chapter ten and verse thirty-two of the book of Joshua, we learn how, “the LORD delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel” where we read,
And the LORD delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, which took it on the second day,
and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah.
The verse reads, “And the LORD delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, which took it on the second day, …” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “and the LORD” which means “and Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “delivered Lachish” or “granted, bestowed, consecrated, dedicated and assigned Lachish whose name means ‘invincible’ and was a city lying south of Jerusalem on the borders of Simeon and which belonged to the Amorites until conquered by Joshua and allotted to Judah” “into the hand” which means “into the hand of the power, might, strength and authority” “of Israel” or “belonging to Israel whose name means God prevails and is the name of the descendants and the nation of the descendants of Jacob”, “which took it” which means “who seized, captured and occupied it, Lachish” “on the second day” or “upon the second sunrise to sunset after attacking Lachish”. Joshua or the writer shared how Jehovah God granted and assigned “Lachish” to the power and might of “Israel” on the “second day” after attacking it.
The verse continues, “… and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah.” Joshua or the writer added the words, “and smote it” which means “and hit, beat, struck, killed and slayed it, Lachish” “with the edge of the sword” or “by the use of the extremity or end belonging to the sharpened knife or cutting instrument”, “and all the souls” which means “and each, every and the whole of the living beings and people” “that were therein” or “who existed as located within the city of Lachish”, “according to all that he had done” which means “in keeping with each, the whole and everything he, Jehovah God through Joshua, performed and acted” “to Libnah” or “toward Libnah whose name means ‘pavement’ and was a royal city of the Canaanites in the southwest captured by Joshua; allocated to Judah and made a Levitical city; site unknown”. Joshua or the writer shared how Jehovah God through Joshua and the armies of Israel struck and killed the people of “Lachish” in keeping with the way they acted toward the people of “Libnah”.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn about another city, Lachish, that Jehovah God gave over to the people of “Israel”. After only “two days” the city was occupied, and the people there were eliminated. God was on the move in opposition to the people of the promise land, and one by one they were being eliminated and destroyed. In a similar way, God desires to have this type of relationship with us through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was resurrected from the dead after three days. When we yield our lives to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and help us to defeat and destroy any enemies of our souls, including our own sins, that need to be removed.
Next time we learn how, “Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
