In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, unto Libnah, and fought against Libnah”, and in chapter ten and verse thirty of the book of Joshua, we learn how, “the LORD delivered it also, and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel” where we read,
And the LORD delivered it also, and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel; and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain in it; but did unto the king thereof as he did unto the king of Jericho.
The verse reads, “And the LORD delivered it also, and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel;” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “and the LORD” which means “and Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “delivered it also” or “gave, bestowed, granted and consecrated it, Libnah, even so and indeed”, “and the king thereof” which means “and the royal ruler and leader belonging to Libnah”, “into the hand of Israel” or “in the power, might, strength and authority belonging to Israel whose name means God prevails and is the name of the descendants and the nation of the descendants of Jacob”. Joshua or the writer shared how Jehovah God gave the city of “Libnah” and their royal ruler over to the power and authority belonging to “Israel”.
The verse continues, “and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain in it; but did unto the king thereof as he did unto the king of Jericho.” Joshua or the writer added the words, “and he smote it” which means “and he, Jehovah God through Joshua, hit, beat, slayed and killed the city of Libnah” “with the edge of the sword” or “by the use of the extremity or end belonging to the sharpened knife or cutting instrument”, “and all the souls” which means “and each, every and the whole of the living beings and people” “that were therein” or “who lived within the city of Libnah”; “he let none remain in it” which means “he, Jehovah God through Joshua, did not allow or permit anyone to continue or remain alive”; “but did unto the king thereof” or “and he, Joshua, performed and acted upon the royal ruler within Libnah” “as he did unto the king of Jericho” which means “in a similar and like manner to the way he, Joshua, performed and acted toward the royal ruler belonging to Jericho whose name means its moon and was a city five miles (8 km) west of the Jordan and seven miles (11.5 km) north of the Dead Sea and the first city conquered by the Israelites upon entering the promised land of Canaan”. Joshua or the writer shared how Jehovah God through Joshua slayed, killed and completely destroyed the people and royal ruler of “Libnah” so that not one person remained alive, and he performed the same act upon the royal ruler of “Libnah” as he did with the royal ruler of “Jericho”
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn how “Joshua” was used by Jehovah God to conquer another city, “Libnah”, located within the promise land, and just like the previous ones he conquered, no one remained and the royal ruler was killed. These different cities become good “types” for us as we receive as “Savior and Lord” God’s Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was resurrected from the dead after three days. When we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth and help us to identify “enemies or those sinful areas” within our souls that not only need to be exterminated, but also the royal ruler of them must be put to death.
Next time we learn how, “Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, unto Lachish”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
