In the book of Ezra, Ezra shared about “the children of the province that went up out of the captivity” which included those who came with “Zerubabbel” among whom were “the Nethinims: the children of Ziha, the children of Hasupha, the children of Tabbaoth, the children of Keros, the children of Siaha, the children of Padon, the children of Lebanah, the children of Hagabah, the children of Akkub, ...”,and in chapter two and verse forty six of Ezra, Ezra shared about, “the children of Hagab, Shalmai and Hanan” where we read,
The children of Hagab, the children of Shalmai, the children of Hanan,
The verse reads, “The children of Hagab, the children of Shalmai, ...” Ezra began with the words, “the children” which means “the offspring and progeny” “of Hagab” which means “belonging to Hagab whose name means locust and was the head of a family of exiles who returned to Jerusalem with Zerubbabel”, “the children” or “the offspring and progeny” “of Shalmai” which means “belonging to Shalmai or Salmai whose name means my thanks and was the ancestor of a family of temple slaves who returned from exile with Zerubbabel”. Ezra shared about the offspring of “Hagab and Shalmai”who returned with the “Nethinims” to Jerusalem.
The verse goes on to say, “... the children of Hanan, ...” Ezra continued with the words, “the children” or “the offspring and progeny” “of Hanan” which means “belonging to Hanan or Canan whose name means he is merciful”. Ezra shared how the descendants belonging to “Hanan” joined with the “Nethinims” who went back to Jerusalem.
When we consider the words in this verse, we discover through Ezra about other families among the “Nethinims” or servants of the temple who returned to Jerusalem at the commission of Jehovah God through Cyrus the king of Persia. One by one God was calling His people Israel back to their homeland, and because the temple would need to be kept clean and in repair, the families of “Hagab, Shalmai and Hanan” would be among the ones who serviced it. God wants everyone to be a part in His Kingdom, and because we have sin in our lives, (See Romans 3:10,23) He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. (See John 3:16) When we believe and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and equip us to serve in His Kingdom according to His perfect will and purpose for our lives.
Next time Ezra shares about, “the children of Giddel, Gahar and Reaiah”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
