The Children of Neziah and Hatipha - Ezra 2:54

In the book of Ezra, Ezra shared about “the children of the province that went up out of the captivity” which included those who came with “Zerubabbel” among whom were “the Nethinims: the children of Ziha, Hasupha, Tabbaoth, Keros, Siaha, Padon, Lebanah, Hagabah, Akkub, Hagab, Shalmai, Hanan, Giddel, Gahar, Reaiah, Rezin, Nekoda, Gazzam, Uzza, Paseah, Besai, Asnah, Mehunim, Nephusim, Bakbuk, Hakupha, Harhur, Bazluth, Mehida, Harsha, Barkos, Sisera and Thamah ...”,and in chapter two and verse fifty-four of Ezra, Ezra shared about, “the children of Neziah and Hatipha”where we read,

The children of Neziah, the children of Hatipha.

The verse reads, The children of Neziah, ... Ezra began with the words, “the children” which means “the offspring and progeny” “of Neziah” which means “belonging to Neziah whose name means pre-eminent and was a head of a family of temple slaves who returned from exile with Zerubbabel”. Ezra accounted for the offspring of “Neziah” who were among the “Nethinims” and returned to Jerusalem after being exiled in Babylon for seventy years.

The verse goes on to say, ... the children of Hatipha, ... Ezra continued with the words, the children” or “the offspring and progeny” “of Hatipha” which means “belonging to Hatipha whose name means seized and was a head of a family of temple slaves who returned from exile with Zerubbabel”. Ezra included the progeny of “Hatipha” who went back to their homeland among the “Nethinims” who were to serve in the temple and to give aid to the Levites.

When we think through Ezra's words in this verse, we discover another two families who obeyed the commission of Jehovah God through Cyrus the king of Persia to return to Jerusalem. The offspring of “Neziah and Hatipha” were the next on the list of exiled ones who were among the “Nethinims” and went back as He directed. God was assembling a group of people who would serve in His temple, and even as today He invites everyone to come unto Him. (See Matthew 11:28) He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we put our faith and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us a desire and ability to serve in His Kingdom according to His perfect will and plan.

Next time Ezra shares about, “the children of Solomon's servants”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
