Camels and Donkeys - Ezra 2:67

In the book of Ezra, Ezra shared about “the children of the province that went up out of the captivity” which included those who came with “Zerubabbel” among whom “the whole congregation together was forty and two thousand three hundred and threescore. Beside their servants and their maids, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred thirty and seven: and there were among them two hundred singing men and singing women. Their horses were seven hundred thirty and six; their mules, two hundred forty and five”,and in chapter two and verse sixty-seven of Ezra, Ezra shared about, “their camels and donkeys” where we read,

Their camels, four hundred thirty and five; their asses, six thousand seven hundred and twenty.

The verse reads, Their camels, four hundred thirty and five;” Ezra began with the words, “their camels” which means “their, the congregation of people who went back to Jerusalem's, labor or burden bearing camels”, “four hundred thirty and five” which means “four hundred and thirty five camels”. Ezra shared how the people of Israel returned to Jerusalem with “four hundred and thirty five” load bearing “camels” accompanying them.

The verse continues, their asses, six thousand seven hundred and twenty. Ezra added the words, their asses” or “the people of Israel returned to Jerusalem's donkeys”, “six thousand seven hundred and twenty” which means “sixty seven hundred and twenty donkeys accompanied the people of Israel back to Jerusalem”. Ezra said sixty seven hundred and twenty donkeys also went back to Jerusalem with the people of Israel.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Ezra about more of the animals that returned to Jerusalem alongside the people of Israel. God was assembling His people and animals that would serve in the rebuilding of the temple and worship and maintenance that would be carried out there. God loves the people of Israel, and He loves us. When He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, He provided the way through belief and trust in Him for us to be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and allowed to be a part of His temple, the church, that shall worship and serve Him for all eternity.

Next time Ezra shares what happened with, “some of the chief of the fathers”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
