In the book of Ezra, Ezra shared about “the children of the province that went up out of the captivity” which included those who came with “Zerubabbel” among whom were “the men of Netophah and Anathoth and Azmaveth” and “the children of Kirjatharim, Chephirah, Beeroth, Ramah and Gaba, and the men of Michmas, Bethel and Ai”,and in chapter two and verse twenty-nine of Ezra, Ezra shared about “the children of Nebo” where we read,
The children of Nebo, fifty and two.
The verse reads, “The children of Nebo, ...” Ezra began with the words, “the children” which means “the offspring and progeny” “of Nebo” or “belonging to Nebo whose name means prophet and was a city in Judah (maybe Benjamin) from which the families of some exiles, who returned from Babylon with Zerubbabel, originally came”. Ezra accounted for the offspring belonging to “Nebo” who returned to Jerusalem.
The verse continues, “... fifty and two.” Ezra added the words, “fifty and two” or “fifty two offspring of Nebo went back to Jerusalem with Zerubbabel”. Ezra said there were fifty two of the offspring of “Nebo” who joined the crowd of people who were going back to their homeland in Jerusalem.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Ezra about more of the people who heard the commission of Jehovah God through Cyrus the king of Persia to return to Jerusalem after being exiled in Babylon for seventy years. One by one Ezra accounted for these families including those from “Nebo”, and as each of them obeyed the LORD's command, they demonstrated their faith and trust in Him. God calls out to everyone to receive His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us a willingness to hear and obey Him as He provides direction for our lives.
