In the book of Ezra, Ezra shared about “the children of the province that went up out of the captivity” which included those who came with “Zerubabbel” among whom were “the men of Michmas, Bethel and Ai, and the children of Nebo, Magbish, the other Elam, Harim, Lod, Hadid, Ono, Jericho, Senaah and the priest's children of Jedaiah, the house of Jeshua, Immer, Pashur and Harim and the Levites; the children of Jeshua and Kadmiel, of the children of Hodaviah”,and in chapter two and verse forty one of Ezra, Ezra shared about, “the singers” where we read,
The singers: the children of Asaph, an hundred twenty and eight.
The verse reads, “The singers: the children of Asaph, ...” Ezra began with the words, “the Levites” which means “”: “the singers” which means “the ones who make music with their voices”: “the children” or “the offspring or progeny” “of Asaph” which means “belonging to Asaph whose name means gatherer and was the chief musician within Israel”. Ezra accounted for the family of the “singers” who returned to Jerusalem after being captive in Babylon for seventy years.
The verse continues, “... an hundred twenty and eight.” Ezra added the words, “ an hundred twenty and eight.” or “one hundred and twenty eight members of the singing family of Asaph returned to Jerusalem”. Ezra said there were one hundred and twenty-eight members of the “singers” from “Asaph” who went back to their homeland.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see through Ezra's words how the temple members were being brought back to Jerusalem even as God desired. “The priests, the Levites and the singers” were all part of the worship which would be carried out by the people of Israel after they rebuilt the temple in Jerusalem. “Asaph” was the ancestor of one hundred and twenty-eight people who went back to Jerusalem at the commission of Jehovah God through Cyrus the king of Persia, and God continues to call people today through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins. When we yield our lives to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit to guide into all truth and empower us to keep it to fulfill His will and purpose for our lives. (See John 16:13; Acts 1:8)
Next time Ezra shares about, “the children of the porters”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
