In the book of Ezra, Ezra shared about “the children of the province that went up out of the captivity” which included those who came with “Zerubabbel” among whom were “Zattu, Zaccai, Bebai, Azgad, Adonikam, Adin, Ater of Hezekiah, Bezai, Jorah, Hashum, Gibbar, Bethlehem and the men of Netophah and Anathoth”,and in chapter two and verse twenty-four of Ezra, Ezra shared about “the men of Azmaveth” where we read,
The men of Azmaveth, forty and two.
The verse reads, “The men of Azmaveth ...” Ezra began with the words, “the men” which means “the male human beings” “of Azmaveth” which means “belonging to Azmaveth whose name means strong unto death and was a Benjamite, father of Jeziel and Pelet who were two of David's men who joined him at Ziklag”. Ezra mentioned the male human beings who were part of the family of “Azmaveth”.
The verse goes on to say, “... forty and two.” Ezra added the words, “forty and two” or “forty two men were part of the family of Azmaveth who returned to Jerusalem with Zerubbabel”. Ezra said there were forty-two men who were from the family of Azmaveth who went back to Jerusalem in obedience to Jehovah God and the commission of Cyrus the king of Persia.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Ezra about the “men” from the family of “Azmaveth”who returned to Jerusalem with Zerubbabel. The meaning of his name is very interesting, “strong unto death”, and this is the way God want us to be when we have a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we believe and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and help us to be “strong unto death” until we go to live with Him in Heaven some day.
