In the book of Ezra, Ezra shared about “the children of the province that went up out of the captivity” which included those who came with “Zerubabbel” among whom were “the Nethinims: the children of Ziha, Hasupha, Tabbaoth, Keros, Siaha, Padon, Lebanah, Hagabah, Akkub, Hagab, Shalmai, Hanan, Giddel, Gahar and Reaiah ...”,and in chapter two and verse forty eight of Ezra, Ezra shared about, “the children of Rezin, Nekoda and Gazzam” where we read,
The children of Rezin, the children of Nekoda, the children of Gazzam,
The verse reads, “The children Rezin, the children of Nekoda, ...” Ezra began with the words, “the children” which means “the offspring and progeny” “of Rezin” which means “belonging to Rezin whose name means firm and was the progenitor of a family of temple slaves who returned from captivity with Zerubbabel”, “the children” or “the offspring and progeny” “of Nekoda” which means “belonging to Nekoda whose name means distinguished and was the head of a family of temple slaves returning from exile to Jerusalem with Zerubbabel”. Ezra shared how the “Nethimin” families belonging to “Rezin and Nekoda” also returned to Jerusalem.
The verse continues, “... the children of Gazzam, ...” Ezra added the words, “the children” or “the offspring and progeny” “of Gazzam” which means “belonging to Gazzam whose name means devouring and was the the head of a family of temple slaves returning from exile with Zerubbabel”. Ezra included the family of “Gazzam” who were among the “Nethinims” who went back to their homeland.
When we think through Ezra's words in this verse, we learn about three more families who were among the “Nethinims”that traveled back to Jerusalem at the commission of Jehovah God through Cyrus the king of Persia. God's plan for the people of Israel was coming together, and soon they would be back in their land to rebuild the temple there. The “Nethinims” or servants of the temple and the Levites would be important for the maintenance and service in the temple, and in like manner when we receive God's Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins as our “Savior and Lord”, we shall be important to His work. As we receive Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and equip us to serve in His church and in His Kingdom according to His perfect will and plan.
Next time Ezra shares about, “the children of Uzza, Paseah and Besai”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
