Luke the physician wrote how Zacharias and Elisabeth were told by the angel Gabriel they would have a son. Luke continued, “And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying ...” the following words. In chapter one and verse twenty-five of his book Luke shares how Elisabeth said, “thus has the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me”, where we read:
Thus has the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me,
to take away my reproach among men.
The verse reads, “Thus has the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, ...” Luke began with the words, “Thus has the Lord” or “in this manner the One in whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding and the title given to God the Messiah” “dealt with me” which means “has prepared, made ready and produced in Elisabeth herself” “in the days” or “within the time period and age” “wherein” which means “in which” “he looked on me” or “the Lord has regarded and beheld Elisabeth”. Luke shared how Elisabeth gave credit and glory for “looking upon” her and bringing about her pregnancy.
The verse goes on to say, “... to take away my reproach among men.” Luke continued with the words, “to take away” which means “to remove, eliminate and carry off” “my reproach” or “Elisabeth's taunting and disgrace” “among men” which means “with people whether male or female”. Luke shared how Elisabeth gave glory to the “Lord” for “removing” her “disgrace” with people.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how Elisabeth gave “glory to God” for blessing her with the expectation of a child. The “angel Gabriel” told her husband Zacharias that God heard his prayer, and now they were seeing the fulfillment of his words. God desires to “bless” people even when they have been “reproached” by others. God wants people to believe and trust in Him and His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, and when they receive “blessings” from Him, the best response is to give “glory” to Him for the great things He has done.
Next time Luke shares how, “in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
