Luke the physician wrote, “in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, you that are highly favored, the Lord is with you: blessed are you among women. And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for you have found favor with God”, and in chapter one and verse thirty-one of his book Luke shared how the angel tells Mary, “call his name JESUS” where we read:
And, behold, you shall conceive in your womb, and bring forth a son, and shall call his name JESUS.
The verse reads, “And, behold, you shall conceive in your womb, ...” Luke began with the words, “and behold” or “and look, lo and consider”,“you shall conceive” which means “you, Mary, will catch, take, seize, aid and capture” “in your womb” or “within Mary's belly or stomach”. Luke shared how the “angel” told Mary she would “conceive” a child within her “womb”.
The verse goes on to say, “... and bring forth a son, and shall call his name JESUS.” Luke continued with the words, “and bring forth a son” which means “and bear and produce a male human being”, “and shall call his name” or “and will name the male child” “JESUS” which means “Jehovah is Salvation”. Luke shared how the “angel” told Mary she would “produce” a “male child” whom she was to name “Jesus” which means “Jehovah is Salvation”.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we discover the message and assignment given by the “angel” to Mary. Mary was to become pregnant with a “male child”, and she was to name her son, Jesus which means “Jehovah is Salvation”. This was God's message to the world. The world was filled with “sin” which separated people from God. In order for those people to relate to God, sin needed to be removed. Mary was to be the agent through whom God would send His “Savior Son Jesus”, and when people submit their lives to Him, they receive “forgiveness” for their sins and are promised “everlasting life” with God. “Jehovah is Salvation” was to be born, and all who yield to Him will follow the example of Mary who received Him into her life.
Next time Luke shares how the “angel” says, “he shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
