The Son of the Highest Luke 1:32

Luke the physician wrote, “in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, you that are highly favored, the Lord is with you: blessed are you among women. And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for you have found favor with God. And, behold, you shall conceive in your womb, and bring forth a son, and shall call his name JESUS, and in chapter one and verse thirty-two the angel tells Mary her son will be “called the Son of the Highest” where we read:

He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest:

and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

The verse reads, “He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: Luke began with the words, “he shall be great” or “Mary's son Jesus will be abundant in stature, authority and esteem”,“and shall be called” which means “and will be named and saluted as” “the Son of the Highest” or “the offspring and progeny of the Most High God”. Luke shared how Jesus was to be awesome in stature and authority and known as the Son of the Most High God.

The verse continues, “and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:” Luke added the words, “and the Lord God” which means “and the One whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah” “shall give unto him” or “will grant, bestow, supply and furnish unto Jesus” “the throne” which means “the chair of state which is assigned to kingly power or royalty” “of his father David” or “belonging to Jesus' earthly lineage of King David whose name means beloved”. Luke shared how God Almighty would grant that Jesus be seated upon the “throne” of authority like His ancestor King “David”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus was to be “exalted” among people and known as God's Son. He also would be “granted” the “seat” of authority where His “ancestor” King “David” once sat. This denotes the power Jesus would exercise over all people. God's desire is to allow every person to know His Son Jesus personally, and He sent Him with the exalted position and authority that would rule over all of them. Jesus' purpose for coming was to “die” for the “sins” of mankind that they may have an opportunity to be forgiven and receive “everlasting life” with God. May all who consider the announcement of this “angel” consider who Jesus really is, and turn their lives unto Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Luke shares how the “angel” says, “he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
