Luke the physician wrote, “in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, you that are highly favored, the Lord is with you: blessed are you among women.”, and in chapter one and verse twenty-nine of his book, Luke shares how Mary, “was troubled at his saying” where we read:
And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying,
and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.
The verse reads, “And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, ...” Luke began with the words, “and when” or “and at the time and moment” “she saw him” which means “Mary observed, noticed, discerned and discovered the angel”, “she was troubled” or “Mary was disturbed and wholly agitated with alarm” “at his saying” which means “at the angel's utterance, declaration and proclamation”. Luke shared how Mary became “alarmed” at the declaration of the “angel”.
The verse goes on to say, “... and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.” Luke continued with the words, “and cast in her mind” which means “and brought together different reasons, resolved and deliberated within her own thoughts” “what manner of salutation” or “what sort or quality of greeting” “this should be” which means “the salutation would happen or be present”. Luke shared how Mary “reasoned' within her thoughts as to what this special “greeting” by the “angel” meant.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see the reaction of Mary to the visitation of the “angel”. We might imagine that she was “disturbed” in her thoughts because of what she was told, and since she was deemed “highly favored”, “the Lord” was “with her” and she was “blessed among women”, she must have greatly wondered what these things meant. God loves to bless people, and as He began this revelation to “Mary”, who would be the mother of His Son, we get another glimpse into the plan of God to provide “salvation” for mankind so he could spend “everlasting life” with Him.
Next time Luke shares how, “the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
