The Parents of the Girl Astonished - Luke 8:56

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus healed a woman with an issue of blood while He was journeying to Jairus' house to attend to his daughter, and while He spoke to the woman, “there came one from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying to him, Your daughter is dead; trouble not the Master. But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole. And when he came into the house, he suffered no man to go in, save Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the maiden. And all wept, and bewailed her: but he said, Weep not; she is not dead, but sleeps. And they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead. And he put them all out, and took her by the hand, and called, saying, Maid, arise. And her spirit came again, and she arose straightway: and he commanded to give her meat”, and in chapter eight and verse fifty-five of his book Luke shared how the people in the house, “laughed” at Jesus where we read:

And her parents were astonished: but he charged them that they should tell no man what was done.

The verse reads, “And her parents were astonished: Luke began with the words, “and parents” or “and Jairus and his wife” “were astonished” which means “were amazed, in awe and wonder”. Luke shared how the young “maiden's” parents, Jairus and his wife, were “amazed” by what Jesus did for their daughter.

The verse goes on to say, “but he charged them that they should tell no man what was done.” Luke continued with the words, “but he charged them” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover Jesus commanded, ordered and declared to Jairus and his wife” “that they should tell no man” or “that Jairus and his wife were not to speak to, bring word or say to anyone” “what was done” which means “that these things were performed, arose and happened”. Luke shared how Jesus instructed Jairus and his wife that they were not to broadcast to anyone what happened to their daughter.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see the reaction of Jairus and his wife was “amazement”, and we learn of Jesus' instruction to them not to speak to anyone about what He did for their daughter. Jesus had His timing for everything, and at this time He did not want anyone to know the miracle He performed. God desires to have a relationship with every person through His Son Jesus Christ, and His timing and broadcasting of what He does should be in accordance with His plan. We have read this story, and it means the story was eventually told, but let all who read these words understand God's instruction for silence at times when He performs works that cause all who see them to be amazed.

Next time we begin a new chapter and see Luke share how Jesus gave His disciples, “power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
