The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “When you make a dinner or a supper, call not your friends, nor your brethren, neither your kinsmen, nor your rich neighbors; lest they also bid you again, and a recompense be made you. But when you make a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind. And you shall be blessed; for they cannot recompense you: for you shall be recompensed at the resurrection of the just”, and in chapter fourteen and verse fifteen of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God” where we read:
And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him,
Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.
The verse reads, “And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, ...” Luke began with the words, “and when one of them” or “and at the time and moment a certain one of the people at the chief Pharisee's feast” “sat at meat with him” which means “was seated or reclining to feast with Jesus” “heard these things” or “was given the faculty for hearing, perceived and understood Jesus' words”, “he said unto him” which means “the person seated with Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed” the following words. Luke shared how someone sitting near Jesus at the chief Pharisee's feast “heard” what Jesus said and made the following proclamation.
The verse goes on to say, “Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.” Luke continued with the words, “Blessed is he” or “Oh how happy, fortunate and well-off is the person whether male or female” “that shall eat bread” which means “who will consume and devour food or flour mixed with water and baked” “in the kingdom of God” or “within the royal power, kingship, dominion and rule belonging to the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”. Luke shared how the person seated next to Jesus who heard Him speak declared the person who “eats bread” in God's Kingdom is “fortunate and oh how happy”.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn about this sudden outburst by someone seated near Jesus at the “chief Pharisee's” feast. Sometimes, the excitement over the words of Jesus cannot be contained, and for anyone who truly understands what He declares, they tend to make loud and spontaneous declarations. God loves people to understand and believe in His Son Jesus because it pleases Him and the person is greatly “blessed”. His offer is to anyone who will simply humble themselves, receive Jesus and yield to Him as “Savior and Lord” of their life. Those who are wise will “come” to Jesus who is able to “bless” them in God's Kingdom for all eternity.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “a certain man made a great supper, and bade many”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
