Luke the beloved physician wrote how Jesus said, “When you make a dinner or a supper, call not your friends, nor your brethren, neither your kinsmen, nor your rich neighbors; lest they also bid you again, and a recompense be made you. But when you make a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind. And you shall be blessed; for they cannot recompense you: for you shall be recompensed at the resurrection of the just. And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God”, and in chapter fourteen and verse sixteen of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “a certain man made a great supper, and bade many” where we read:
Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many:
The verse reads, “Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, ...” Luke began with the words, “then said he unto him” or “at that time Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed to the man who made the declaration about eating in the kingdom of God”, “A certain man” which means “a particular male human being” “made a great supper” or “prepared, produced, constituted and appointed a large and massive feast or formal meal usually held at the evening”. Luke shared how Jesus began to share about a “particular” man who prepared a “feast”.
The verse goes on to say, “and bade many:” Luke continued with the words, “and bade” or “and invited and called forth” “many” which means “a large and massive group of people”. Luke shared how the particular man who prepared the “feast” invited a lot of people to join him to eat.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn of the beginning of another story from Jesus. This time He spoke of a “man” who prepared a “great supper” and invited many guest to attend His feast. God has done likewise. He has prepared a “marriage supper of the lamb” (See Revelation 19:9) which is on behalf of His Son Jesus. Everyone is invited to attend, and the acceptance of His invitation is based upon their belief and trust in His Son Jesus who died for their sins and provided “salvation” to everyone. Those who are wise will understand and perceive Jesus' story and accept His invitation to come to the greatest feast that has ever been prepared.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus tells how the host says, “Come; for all things are now ready”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
