The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “A certain man made a great supper, and bade many, and sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready. And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray you have me excused”, and in chapter fourteen and verse nineteen of his book Luke shared how Jesus said one of the invited guests said, “I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them” where we read:
And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray you have me excused.
The verse reads, “And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them:” Luke began with the words, “and another said” or “and an other invited guest uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “I have bought” which means “I purchased” “five yoke of oxen” or “five paired together ox”, “and I go to prove them” which means “and I'm departing to test, examine, scrutinize, approve and deem worthy the oxen”. Luke shared how Jesus said another one of the invited guest gave the excuse that he purchased “five” sets of ox that he needed to examine and deem worthy.
The verse continues, “I pray you have me excused.” Luke added the words, “I pray you” or “I, Jesus, ask, request, entreat, beg and beseech the host of the feast” “have me excused” which means “allow me not to come or to accept the invitation to the feast”. Luke shared how Jesus said the man who purchased the oxen asked to be exempt from coming to the feast.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus said this man allowed “five yoke of oxen” to keep him form attending the feast. Though he could have delayed examining his “oxen”, he chose to value his possessions more than attending the feast. Many people choose belongings over God's invitation to receive His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior”, and because their “things” are more important to them, they refuse to accept Him as their Lord.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus said one of the invited guests said, “I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
