The apostle John wrote how Jesus, “rose from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself”, and in chapter thirteen and verse five of his book John shared how Jesus, “poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet” where we read:
After that he poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet,
and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
The verse reads, “After that he poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, ...” John began with the words, “after that he poured water” which means “then and next he, Jesus, put and inserted water” “into a basin” or “into a vessel for washing the hands and feet”, “and began to wash” which means “and initiated and started to cleanse or perform ablution on” “the disciples' feet” or “the students, pupils and attendants of Jesus' physical feet”. John shared how Jesus “put water” into a “washing vessel” and started to “cleanse” His “disciple's feet”.
The verse goes on to say, “... and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.” John added the words, “and to wipe them” which means “and to wipe dry the disciple's feet” “with the towel” or “with the linen cloth or apron” “wherewith he was girded” which means “which he, Jesus, had tied about Himself”. John shared how Jesus also “dried” His “disciples feet” with the “apron” with which He had “girded” Himself.
When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus not only “poured water” into a “washing vessel”, but He also began to “wash” and “dry” His “disciples' feet”. Jesus performed this act because He desired to teach His disciples the principle of “service” to others. Washing the feet of people who entered into a room where a “feast” was held was customary as a “servant” would “wash” the guests' feet from the grime and dirt gathered from the roads. Jesus took on this role as He washed and dried His disciples' feet. God served mankind by sending His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the penalty of sins, and anyone who surrenders their life to Him will receive forgiveness from Him. Jesus rose from the dead three days later to demonstrate His power over death, and every person who yields their life to Him will receive “everlasting life”. Those who are wise will examine this “service” of Jesus and know He demonstrated His love and compassion for mankind as He gave His life on their behalf.
Next time we see John share how Jesus, “came to Simon Peter: and Peter said unto him, Lord, do you wash my feet?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
