Jesus Girding Himself with a Towel - John 13:4

The apostle John wrote, “Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end. And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him. Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God, and in chapter thirteen and verse four of his book John shared how Jesus, “took a towel, and girded himself” where we read:

He rose from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.

The verse reads, “He rose from supper, and laid aside his garments; John began with the words, “He rose from supper” which means “Jesus arose and stood up from the formal evening meal”, “and laid aside his garments” or “and placed, put and set to side His, Jesus', clothes, upper garments, cloak, tunic or mantle”. John shared how Jesus got up from the “passover meal” and set to the side His “clothing”.

The verse goes on to say, “and took a towel, and girded himself.” John continued with the words, “and took a towel” which means “and lay hold of, claimed and procured a linen cloth or apron which servants put on when they were about to work”, “and girded himself” or “and bound or tied the apron to His own self”. John shared Jesus “lay hold of” a “servant's apron” and tied it around Himself.

When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus took upon Himself the “role of a servant” after the “passover meal” was ended. Jesus came to the earth to “serve” mankind, and when He went to the cross to die for their sins, Jesus provided the greatest “servile” work that may be performed. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to be an example of His love and care for all people, and anyone who yields their life to Him as their “Savior and Lord” will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life with God. Let all who read these words understand to what lengths the Lord Jesus went so they might be “saved”.

Next time we see John share how Jesus, “poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
