The apostle John wrote, “Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end”, and in chapter thirteen and verse two of his book John shared, “the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him” where we read:
And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son,
to betray him;
The verse reads, “And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, ...” John began with the words, “and supper being ended” which means “and the formal meal usually held in the evening was finished”, “the devil” or “the one prone to slander, false accusing, calumniator and Satan” “having now put into the heart” which means “by this time and already thrust, poured and inserted into the soul or mind, as it is the fountain and seat of the thoughts, passions, desires, appetites, affections, purposes and endeavors” “of Judas Iscariot” or “belonging to Judas whose name means he shall be praised and was from Iscariot which means men of Kerioth”, “Simon's son” which means “the male progenitor and offspring of Simon whose name means little rock or stone”. John shared how the “evening meal” was completed, and “Satan” had entered into His disciple named “Judas Iscariot”.
The verse goes on to say, “... to betray him;” John continued with the words, “to betray” which means “to deliver over to the custody, judgment, condemnation, punishment, torment and death of” “him” which refers to “Jesus”. John shared how “Satan” put into “Judas Iscariot's” heart and mind to “deliver” Jesus over to the rulers who would torture Him and put Him to death.
When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn not only that the “passover dinner” was ending, but also that the “devil” himself had entered into “Judas Iscariot”. “Satan” gave “Judas” the idea to “deliver” Jesus over to the people who would try Him, condemn Him and eventually execute Him. God's plan of salvation for mankind was being fulfilled, and each part of this story was meant to bring about the “rescue” of mankind from the penalty for sin. Jesus was to be “betrayed” and “die on the cross” so people could be forgiven of their sins and inherit everlasting life with God. Those who yield their lives to Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” will enjoy the benefits of Jesus suffering on their behalf.
Next time we see John share how Jesus knew, “that the Father had given all things into his hands”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
