The apostle John wrote how Jesus, “knew who should betray him; therefore said he, You are not all clean. So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know you what I have done to you? You call me Master and Lord: and you say well; for so I am”, and in chapter thirteen and verse fourteen of his book John shared how Jesus told His disciples, “you ought to wash one another's feet” where we read:
If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; you also ought to wash one another's feet.
The verse reads, “If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet;” John began with the words, “If I then” which means “whether I, Jesus, therefore, wherefore and on this account”, “your Lord” or “your, disciples of Jesus, One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah” “and Master” which means “and teacher”, “have washed your feet” or “and cleansed and performed ablution upon your, disciples of Jesus', physical feet”. John shared how Jesus referred to the titles His disciples addressed Him by as He directed their attention to how He “cleansed” their “feet”.
The verse continues, “you also ought to wash one another's feet.” John added the words, “you also ought” which means “you, disciples of Jesus, even so and indeed should be in obligation and duty” “to wash one another's feet” or “to cleanse and perform ablution upon each other's physical feet”. John shared how Jesus told His disciples they should follow His example and “wash” each other's “feet”.
When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus challenged His disciples to “follow” His “example” for washing one another's feet. Jesus came to the world to demonstrate the “love of His Father God” toward people, and He gave His life on the cross to pay the penalty for the sins of all mankind. Every person who surrenders their life to Him will be forgiven of their sins and receive everlasting life with God. Jesus came to “serve” mankind, and those who yield to Him are to “serve” one another according to His example.
Next time John shares how Jesus tells His disciples, “I have given you an example”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
