The apostle John wrote how Jesus, “knew who should betray him; therefore said he, You are not all clean. So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know you what I have done to you?”, and in chapter thirteen and verse thirteen of his book John shared how Jesus told His disciples, “you call me Master and Lord: and you say well” where we read:
You call me Master and Lord: and you say well; for so I am.
The verse reads, “You call me Master and Lord:” John began with the words, “You call me” which means “you, disciples of Jesus, address me, Jesus as” “Master” or “teacher” “and Lord” which means “and One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah”. John shared how Jesus referred to the way His “disciples” addressed Him as their “teacher” and “One to whom all things belong”.
The verse goes on to say, “and you say well; for so I am.” John continued with the words, “and you say well” which means “and you, disciples of Jesus, utter, declare and proclaim this beautifully, finely, excellently and right”; “for so I am” or “because and since I, Jesus, exist as teacher and One to whom all things belong”. John shared how Jesus affirmed the way His disciples address Him.
When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus began this teaching to His disciples by referring to the “titles” they gave Him. He was indeed their “teacher and Master”, and He was “the Lord” of all, and because of this, they were to pay particular attention to what He was about to tell them. Jesus is God's Son who came to provide a way of “salvation” from the penalty of sins to all mankind, and those who surrender their lives to Him will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life. Jesus is the “Master and Lord” of the world, and all who are wise will yield themselves to Him and His direction for their lives.
Next time John shares how Jesus tells His disciples, “you ought to wash one another's feet”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
