Mark wrote how Jesus and His disciples, “in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots. And Peter calling to remembrance said unto him, Master, behold, the fig tree which you cursed is withered away. And Jesus answering said unto them, Have faith in God”, and in chapter eleven and verse twenty-three of his book, Mark shared how Jesus said what happens when, “whosoever shall say unto this mountain, be removed, and be cast into the sea” where we read:
For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be removed, and be cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he said shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he said.
The verse reads, “For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be removed, and be cast into the sea;” Mark began with the words, “for verily” which means “because, since and on account truly and surely” “I say unto you” or “Jesus utters, declares and proclaims to His disciples”, “that whosoever” which means “that whatever person whether male or female” “shall say unto this mountain” or “will utter, declare and proclaim to this hill or rising above the plain”, “be removed” which means “be elevated, raise upwards, be lifted and carried off”, “and be cast into the sea” or “and be thrown into the large body of water such as the Mediterranean or Red Sea”. Mark shared how Jesus told His disciples with assurance that they could speak to a “mountain” and tell it to be “lifted up” and thrown into the “sea” and the following would happen.
The verse continues, “and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he said shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he said.” Mark added the words, “and shall not doubt” which means “and will not dispute, strive and contend” “in his heart” or “within his soul or mind as it is the fountain and seat of the thoughts, passions, desires, appetites, affections, purposes and endeavors”, “but shall believe” which means “nevertheless, notwithstanding, moreover and will be persuaded of, think to be true, place confidence and trust in” “that those things which he said” or “that the words the person has uttered, declared and proclaimed” “shall come to pass” which means “will happen, occur, arise and appear in history”; “he shall have whatsoever” or “that person whether male or female will receive and obtain whatever” “he said” which means “the person whether male or female has uttered, declared and proclaimed”. Mark shared how Jesus put a condition of “not doubting within their soul” to obtain what they “believe” and ask for from God.
When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus presented an awesome truth for those who have “mountains” within their pathways that need to be removed. Let us notice first to whom He is speaking – His disciples. These were men who followed Jesus by “denying themselves, taking up their cross and following Him”. Therefore, they should only “ask” God for things which are in alignment with the will of His Son Jesus and not their own personal aggrandizement. In other words, asking God for things, even big things, should always be submitted to His will through His Son Jesus, and then whatever is asked for in faith will be provided. God loves people, and no one knows more about what people need than He. Sometimes “mountains” are meant to be moved “spoonful by spoonful”, and other times they may move immediately. Regardless of the timing, God has a plan and He is working it out for all who “believe and trust” in His Son Jesus who uttered these words.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus says what happens with, “what things soever you desire, when you pray” , so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
