Jesus Asks One Question - Mark 11:29

Mark wrote how Jesus and His disciples, “come again to Jerusalem: and as he was walking in the temple, there come to him the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders. And say unto him, By what authority do you these things? and who gave you this authority to do these things?”, and in chapter eleven and verse twenty-nine of his book, Mark shared how Jesus said, “I will also ask of you one question” where we read:

And Jesus answered and said unto them, I will also ask of you one question, and answer me,

and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.

The verse reads, “And Jesus answered and said unto them, I will also ask of you one question, and answer me, ...” Mark began with the words, “and Jesus answered” which means “and the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation responded and began to speak” “and said unto them” or “and uttered, declared and proclaim to the chief priests, scribe and elders”, “I will also ask of you” which means “Jesus would even and indeed inquire and demand” “one question” or “a certain mandate, dictum, maxim and matter of discussion”, “and answer me” which means “and respond and give a remark to Jesus”. Mark shared how Jesus responded to the “religious leaders'” question concerning where He obtain His “authority” by asking them a “question” in return.

The verse continues, ... and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. Mark added the words, “and I will tell you” which means “and Jesus would respond and give an answer to the religious leaders” “by what authority” or “from where and whom His power, permission, liberty and right ” “I do these things” which means “Jesus performed, produced, prepared and made ready the things He did within the temple”. Mark shared how Jesus said He would respond to the “religious leaders'” question concerning His “authority” if they would respond to His.

When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus answered the “religious leaders'” question with His own question. Try as they may, the “religious leaders” would always fall short in wisdom against the “Son of God”, and Jesus demonstrated over and over how much greater He was than they. God's desire is for every person to yield their life to His Son Jesus, and when they submit themselves to Him, they shall understand how His “authority” is the greatest of all and anyone who challenges Him will find themselves in opposition to Almighty God. .

Next time Mark shares how Jesus refers to, “the baptism of John” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
