Mark wrote how Jesus, “began to speak unto them by parables. A certain man planted a vineyard, and set an hedge about it, and dug a place for the winefat, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country”, and in chapter twelve and verse two of his book, Mark shared how Jesus said the man who planted a vineyard, “sent to the husbandmen a servant” where we read:
And at the season he sent to the husbandmen a servant,
that he might receive from the husbandmen of the fruit of the vineyard.
The verse reads, “And at the season he sent to the husbandmen a servant, ...” Mark began with the words, “and at the season” which means “and at the fixed, definite, opportune and seasonable time” “he sent to the husbandmen” or “the lord of the vineyard dismissed, allowed to depart and appointed” “a servant” which means “a slave, bondman or man of servile condition”. Mark shared how Jesus referred to the owner of the “vineyard” sending one of his “servants” to the field at the harvest time.
The verse continues, “that he might receive from the husbandmen of the fruit of the vineyard.” Mark added the words, “that he might receive” which means “so the lord of the vineyard could lay hold of, take up, claim and procure” “from the husbandmen” or “from the tillers of the soil and vine dressers” “of the fruit” which means “pertaining to the grape fruit” “of the vineyard” or “from the field of grapes”. Mark shared how the lord of the vineyard sent his servant to the “vine dressers” so he could collect some of the “fruit” which was grown there.
When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how this “owner” or “lord” of the “vineyard” desired to have “fruit” from his field. He sent his “servant” to collect his “fruit” when the time of harvest had come, and he expected to “receive” that which belonged to him. Jesus used this parable to relate to the Kingdom of God, and as His story unfolds, those who are wise will not only realize that God owns everything, and those who are managing it are to provide “fruit” when He requests it.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus said the husbandmen, “caught, and beat, and sent” the servant “away empty” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
