Mark wrote how, “Jesus entered into Jerusalem, and into the temple: and when he had looked round about upon all things, and now the eventide was come, he went out unto Bethany with the twelve”, and in chapter eleven and verse twelve of his book, Mark shared how Jesus, “was hungry” where we read:
And on the morrow, when they were come from Bethany, he was hungry:
The verse reads, “And on the morrow, when they were come from Bethany, ...” Mark began with the words, “and on the morrow” which means “and on the next day”, “when they were come” or “at the time and moment Jesus and His disciples departed and left” “from Bethany” which means “from the village of Bethany which was a village at the Mount of Olives, about two miles (3 km) from Jerusalem, on or near the normal road to Jericho whose name means house of dates or house of misery”. Mark shared how the next day Jesus and His disciples left the village of Bethany.
The verse goes on to say, “he was hungry:” Mark continued with the word, “he” which means “Jesus” “was hungry” or “craved, needed and sought food with eager desire”. Mark shared how Jesus demonstrated His humanity as He was “hungry” while leaving Bethany.
When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we discover the human nature of Jesus. Just as those reading these words, Jesus was “hungry” and desired food. God loves people to know that He identifies with them in their humanity, and when Jesus is said to have been “hungry”, it helps everyone who wonders how He can relate to them to know, Jesus is the understanding God who came to save every person from their sins so they may live with Him forever.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus sees, “a fig tree afar off having leaves” , so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
