John the apostle wrote how Jesus met a “Samaritan woman” at a well located near the Samaritan city called Sychar. As they conversed the woman said, “unto him, I know that Messiah comes, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. Jesus said unto her, I that speak unto you am he. And upon this came his disciples, and marveled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What do you seek? or, Why are you talking with her? The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and said to the men, ...”, and in chapter four and verse twenty-nine of his book, John shared how the Samaritan woman said, “Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did” where we read:
Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?
The verse reads, “Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did:” John began with the word, “Come” or “follow me and”, “see a man” which means “observe, behold and take heed of a male human being”, “which told me all things” or “who declared, spoke and brought word to the Samaritan each, every, the whole and everything” “that ever I did” which means “as great and far as I, the Samaritan woman, brought forth, caused, worked, bore and performed”. John shared how the “Samaritan woman” told the “men” of the “city” that Jesus disclosed to her everything she “ever did”.
The verse continues, “is not this the Christ?”. John added the words, “is not this” which means “does not this one exist as” “the Christ” or “the anointed One, the Messiah and the Son of God”. John shared how the “Samaritan woman” concluded her statement about Jesus with the question as to whether this “one” who told her everything was the “Messiah”.
When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn how the “Samaritan woman” bore witness or testified about her encounter with Jesus. She declared to the “men of the city” that Jesus “told” her everything she ever did, and she could not help but wonder if Jesus' statement about being the “Christ” was true. Those who experience a true “encounter” with Jesus will find not only that He knows them completely, but He also loves them enough to graciously forgive them and grant them everlasting life. Those who are wise will seek Jesus and ask Him to be the “Lord, Savior and Christ” of their life.
Next time John shares how the men, “went out of the city, and came unto him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
