In Psalms chapter forty nine David said, “They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches; None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him. (For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceases for ever:) That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption. For he sees that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, and leave their wealth to others. Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names”, and in chapter forty nine and verse twelve of Psalms David shared how, “man being in honor abides not” where we read,
Nevertheless man being in honor abides not: he is like the beasts that perish.
The verse begins, “Nevertheless man being in honor abides not:” David began with the words, “Nevertheless man” or “however, notwithstanding and moreover man, which refers to human beings both male and female” “being in honor” which means “existing with value, splendor, pomp and preciousness” “abides not” or “does not continue to live, dwell and endure”. David said even when a person has splendor, pomp and value, they will not remain that way forever.
The verse continues, “he is like the beasts that perish.” David added the words, “he is like the beasts” or “he, the person who is in honor, exists similar and in likeness to cattle, animals and livestock” “that perish” which means “which cease, are destroyed, undone and brought to silence”. David said the person who is “in honor” is similar to animals that are undone and brought to silence.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how David likened people who are “honored” to animals that do not continue to live. In other words, their “honor” is short-lived. Wealth, riches, honor and position are temporal and relate to life on earth, and because there is life after life, God sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind so they could live forever with Him. God knows “all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God”, (See Romans 3:23) and there “is none righteous, no, not one”. (See Romans 3:10) Regardless of how much wealth and honor we gather on earth, it will all be gone when we leave the world. Only that which we have laid up as “treasure in heaven” will be kept, and we who are wise will invest ourselves in God's eternal life. (See Matthew 19:21, Mark 10:21, Luke 18:22)
Next time David shares, “this their way is their folly”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
