In Psalms chapter forty nine David said Jehovah God, “sees that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, and leave their wealth to others. Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names. Nevertheless man being in honor abides not: he is like the beasts that perish”, and in chapter forty nine and verse thirteen of Psalms David said, “this their way is their folly” where we read,
This their way is their folly: yet their posterity approve their sayings. Selah.
The verse begins, “This their way is their folly: ” David began with the words, “This their way” or “the path, road, course and habit of people who have wealth, riches and are in honor and believe it will last forever” “is their folly” which means “exists as their stupidity, confidence and hope”. David said the path of people who believe their “honor” will last forever exists as their false confidence and hope.
The verse goes on to say, “yet their posterity approve their sayings. Selah.” David continued with the words, “yet their posterity” or “however, nonetheless and notwithstanding the offspring and posterity of the people who believe their honor, riches and wealth will last forever” “approve their sayings” which means “are pleased with, favorable to and satisfied with their utterances, declarations and proclamations”. “Selah” or “exalt, lift up and pause to meditate upon it”. David said the offspring of people who believe their wealth, riches and honor will continue forever are pleased with and favorable to what they declare.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through David how the offspring of the people who believe their wealth, riches and honor will last forever are deceived. Rather than consider that these things are temporary in nature, they believed the one with all the gains will last forever on earth. There is indeed an eternal life, however, nothing of the material earth will be carried with us when we leave. God knows this life is temporary, and everything we have will not last, and this is why Jesus said, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life”, (See John 3:16) and anyone who relies upon, clings to and trusts in Jesus will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life. We have an opportunity to realize, “there is only one life, so soon it shall pass, and only what's done for Christ will last”. Let us engage in building wealth, riches and honor that is eternal, and so shall we ever live with the LORD.
Next time David says, “like sheep they are laid in the grave”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
