In Psalms chapter sixty nine David said, “Reproach has broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none”, and in chapter sixty-nine and verse twenty-one of Psalms David said, “they gave me also gall for my meat” where we read,
They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
The verse begins, “They gave me also gall for my meat;” David began with the words, “they gave me also gall” or “they, David's, enemies and hating foes, bestowed, granted, ascribed and consecrated to me, David, even so and indeed bitter and poisonous venom and hemlock” “for my meat” which means “for my, David's, food”. David said his hating foes bestowed upon him poisonous venom for his food.
The verse continues, “and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.” David added the words, “and in my thirst” or “and at the time David was thirsty” “they gave me vinegar to drink” which means “they, David's enemies and hating foes bestowed, granted, ascribed and consecrated to me, David, vinegar or niter to imbibe”. David said at the time he was thirsty, his hating foes presented him with bitter vinegar to drink.
When we think through the words in this verse, we see how David's experience with his adversaries was much like Jesus when He went to the cross. As Jesus hung on the cross, “they gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink” (See Matthew 27:34). In other words, Jesus could identify with David, and He can do the same with us. When we face opposition, Jesus knows what we are going through, and He cares. He died on the cross for our sins, and when we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and accompany us regardless of whether our enemies feed us with “gall” and give us “vinegar” to drink.
Next time David says, “let their table become a snare before them”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
