Sackcloth as My Garment - Psalms 69:11

In Psalms chapter sixty nine David said, “When I wept, and chastened my soul with fasting, that was to my reproach”, and in chapter sixty-nine and verse eleven of Psalms David said, “I made sackcloth also my garment” where we read,

I made sackcloth also my garment; and I became a proverb to them.

The verse begins, I made sackcloth also my garment; David began with the words, “I made sackcloth” or “I, David, gave, put, set, bestowed and ascribed mesh or coarse loose cloth worn in mourning or humiliation” “also my garment” which means “even so and indeed my, David's, clothing, apparel or raiment”. David referred to how he wore coarse loose clothing as sign of outward humility.

The verse continues, and I became a proverb to them. David added the words, “and I became” or “ and I, David, happened, fell out and came to pass as” “a proverb to them” which means “a parable, proverbial saying, aphorism and byword to them, the people who reproached and taunted him”. David said the result of him humbling himself with his coarse clothing was the people who taunted him made him a proverbial saying and a byword.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how David continued to humble himself by wearing coarse clothing, but the result was that his hating foes scorned him by making him a byword. Our enemy, Satan, desires to humiliate and destroy us, and he uses even our spiritual practices to speak against us. In contrast, God loves us, and He sent His Son Jesus to be crucified for the sins of the world. When we believe and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins and grant us everlasting life even while others mock us with their proverbial sayings.

Next time David says, “they that sit in the gate speak against me”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
