In Psalms chapter sixty nine David said, “When I wept, and chastened my soul with fasting, that was to my reproach. I made sackcloth also my garment; and I became a proverb to them”, and in chapter sixty-nine and verse twelve of Psalms David said, “they that sit in the gate speak against me” where we read,
They that sit in the gate speak against me; and I was the song of the drunkards.
The verse begins, “They that sit in the gate speak against me;” David began with the words, “They that sit in the gate” or “the people who are seated, remain, stay and dwell within the public meeting or marketplace” “speak against me” which means “meditate, consider and put forth thoughts in opposition to me, David”. David said the people who were seated at the “gate” or public meeting place of the city were putting forth thoughts in opposition to him.
The verse goes on to say, “and I was the song of the drunkards.” David continued with the words, “and I was the song” or “and I, David, existed as the taunting and mocking music” “of the drunkards” which means “belonging to the drinkers and drunk”. David said he was the brunt of the taunting music which the drinkers and drunk would sing.
When we think through the words in this verse, we see through David how the officials of the city who were seated in the “gate” or meeting place formed thoughts and words against him, and those who “imbibed” alcoholic beverages to the point of intoxication mocked him with their music. In other words, both officials and “drunkards” taunted and persecuted David. God knew this, and He made Himself available to David to call upon when these things were happening to him. God had a personal relationship with David, and He desires to have a relationship with us as well. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified on the cross to pay the price of death for the sins of all mankind, and when we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, we will be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and have Him to rely upon whenever opposition arises with their pernicious thoughts, words and “songs”.
Next time David says, “as for me, my prayer is unto you, O LORD”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
