Gathering Against the Righteous - Psalms 94:21

In Psalms ninety-four the Psalmist asked, “Shall the throne of iniquity have fellowship with you, which frames mischief by a law?” and in chapter ninety-four and verse twenty-one of Psalms the Psalmist said, “they gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous” where we read,

They gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous, and condemn the innocent blood.

The verse begins, They gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous, ... The Psalmist began with the words, “they gather themselves together” or “they, the people who commit wickedness, assemble, penetrate, cut, attack, invade into crowds and troops” “against the soul” which means “in opposition to the heart, mind, will, desires, living being and seat of emotions and passions” “of the righteous” or “belonging to people who are right, just, correct and lawful”. The Psalmist referred to how wicked people assemble together in opposition to the heart, mind and will of people who are right, correct, just and lawful.

The verse goes on to say,... and condemn the innocent blood. The Psalmist continued with the words, “and condemn” or “and act wickedly, declare guilty, violate and disturb” “the innocent blood” which means “the guiltless, blameless, clean, clear and free in blood”. The Psalmist said the wicked violate, declare guilty and violate people who are blameless, clean and free.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how the Psalmist said people who commit evil and wickedness assemble together in opposition to those who are right and just. They declare the guiltless to be guilty, and they cast blame upon the blameless. In order to justify themselves and their wicked ways, they feel a need to collectively “condemn” people who make them feel “guilty”. God set forth His law and commandments, and anyone who violates His law is wrong and has sin in their lives. The law show us our sinfulness, because “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God”. (See Romans 3:23) God sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and protect us against those who assemble to violate and disturb us in our innocence with God.

Next time the Psalmist says, “the LORD is my defense”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
