In Psalms ninety-four the Psalmist asked, “LORD, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked triumph? How long shall they utter and speak hard things? and all the workers of iniquity boast themselves? They break in pieces your people, O LORD, and afflict your heritage. They slay the widow and the stranger, and murder the fatherless. Yet they say, The LORD shall not see, neither shall the God of Jacob regard it”, and in chapter ninety-four and verse eight of Psalms the Psalmist said, “Understand, you brutish among the people” where we read,
Understand, you brutish among the people: and you fools, when will you be wise?
The verse begins, “Understand, you brutish among the people:” The Psalmist began with the word, “Understand” or “consider, perceive and discern”, “you brutish” which means “you people who are kindled, burned and consumed” “among the people” or “in the midst of the members of one's people, compatriots, countrymen, kinsmen and kindred”. The Psalmist called upon the people who were consumed within his nation to consider his words.
The verse goes on to say, “and you fools, when will you be wise?” The Psalmist continued with the words, “and you fools” or “and you people who are stupid, dullards, simpletons and arrogant”, “when will you be wise” which means “at what time and moment shall you, people who are brutish in the nation, exist as prudent, circumspect and with comprehension and insight”? The Psalmist asked the arrogant dullards and simpletons within his nation at what time they would be prudent and circumspect.
When consider the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist called upon the people to stop being dullards and stupid and turn to wisdom and insight. God wants people and nations to humble themselves and turn from their wicked ways to serve Him through His Son Jesus. (See 2 Chronicles 7:14) He sent Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we humble ourselves, turn from our sins and receive Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and align us with His eternal wisdom forever and ever. Let us be “wise”, humble ourselves, repent of our sins, and receive Jesus and we will give Him praise, honor and glory for all eternity.
Next time the Psalmist asks, “He that planted the ear, shall he not hear?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
