The LORD is Great in Zion - Psalms 99:2

In Psalms ninety-nine the Psalmist said, “The LORD reigns; let the people tremble: he sits between the cherubims; let the earth be moved”, and in chapter ninety-nine and verse two of Psalms the Psalmist said, “the LORD is great in Zion” where we read,

The LORD is great in Zion; and he is high above all the people.

The verse begins, The LORD is great in Zion; The Psalmist began with the words, “the LORD” or “Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “is great” which means “exists as large, important and distinguished” “in Zion” or “within Zion whose name means parched place and is another name for Jerusalem especially in the prophetic books”. The Psalmist declared Jehovah God to be important and distinguished within the city of “Zion” or “Jerusalem”.

The verse goes on to say,and he is high above all the people. The Psalmist continued with the words, “and he is high” or “and he, Jehovah God, exists as lofty, exalted and uplifted” “above all the people” which means “over each, every, the whole and everyone of the human beings both male and female”. The Psalmist said Jehovah God exists as exalted and uplifted over every human being.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist wanted his readers and listeners to know Jehovah God's position of authority within the city of “Zion” or “Jerusalem”, and he then expanded his idea to include how Jehovah God is over every human being in the world. God rules. God reigns, and no one comes close to His omnipotence and omniscience. He is everywhere present, and no one is absent from His sight. This same powerful God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for our sins, so we could be forgiven and granted everlasting life with Him when we believe and trust in Him. We have the opportunity to recognize Jehovah God to be the creator and ruler over the world, and when we yield ourselves to His Son Jesus, we shall give Him praise, honor and glory for all eternity for who He is and what He has done.

Next time the Psalmist says, “let them praise your great and terrible name”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
