The LORD is Great - Psalms 96:4

In Psalms ninety-six the Psalmist said, “O sing unto the LORD a new song. Sing unto the LORD, all the earth. Sing unto the LORD, bless his name; show forth his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the heathen, his wonders among all people”, and in chapter ninety-six and verse four of Psalms the Psalmist said, “the LORD is great” where we read,

For the LORD is great, and greatly to be praised: he is to be feared above all gods.

The verse begins, For the LORD is great, and greatly to be praised: The Psalmist began with the words, “for the LORD” or “because, since and on account that Jehovah who is the exiting One and the proper name for the One True God” “is great” which means “exists as important, distinguished and noble”, “and greatly to be praised” or “and abundantly and exceedingly mighty to be commended, celebrated and made renown”. The Psalmist said the reason people should “sing unto the LORD” was because He is distinguished and noble and worthy of commendation and celebration.

The verse continues,he is to be feared above all gods. The Psalmist added the words, “he is to be feared” or “he, Jehovah God, exists to be revered, kept in awe and admired” “above all gods” which means “over each, every, the whole and everyone of the rulers, judges and magistrates”. The Psalmist said Jehovah God is to be kept in greater awe and reverence than any other ruling power.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn why the Psalmist called upon people to “sing” and “declare” Jehovah God and His works throughout the world. God exceeds. God deserves commendation and celebration, and He is to be kept in awe over every other ruling entity in the world. God loves people, and He has manifested Himself through His marvelous acts and deeds. He desires to have an intimate personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus who came into the world to be crucified on the cross for our sins that separated us from Him. When we yield to Jesus as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us eternal life and make Himself known to us in such a way that we know He is “great” and merits all our reverence, awe and praise for all eternity.

Next time the Psalmist says, “all the gods of the nations are idols”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
