Let the Floods Clap Their Hands - Psalms 98:8

In Psalms ninety-eight the Psalmist said, “Let the sea roar, and the fullness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein”, and in chapter ninety-eight and verse eight of Psalms the Psalmist said, “let the floods clap their hands” where we read,

Let the floods clap their hands: let the hills be joyful together.

The verse begins, Let the floods clap their hands: The Psalmist began with the words, “let the floods” or “allow and permit the streams and rivers to” “clap their hands” which means “rub and strike their hands together in exultation”. The Psalmist called for the “streams and rivers” to make a striking sound with their “hands” or breaking waves in exultation to Jehovah God.

The verse continues, let the hills be joyful together. The Psalmist added the words, “let the hills” or “allow and permit the risings above the plains or mountain ranges to” “be joyful together” which means “exist as overcome with a ringing sound or shout for joy unitedly”. The Psalmist beckoned the risings above the plain to be united as they produce a ringing sound and shout for joy unto Jehovah God.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist employed nature and creation to exalt and give praise and worship unto Jehovah God. Raging waters and the mountain ranges were to cry out in thanksgiving and adoration of Him, and anyone who realizes who God is and what He has done for them will join all creation in worshiping Him as well. God loves us so much that He sent His Only Begotten Son Jesus to be crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and encourage us to give Him honor, praise and glory for all eternity.

Next time the Psalmist says all creation is to worship, “before the LORD; for he comes to judge the earth”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
