In Psalms ninety-four the Psalmist asked, “LORD, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked triumph? How long shall they utter and speak hard things? and all the workers of iniquity boast themselves? They break in pieces your people, O LORD, and afflict your heritage”, and in chapter ninety-four and verse seven of Psalms the Psalmist said, “They slay the widow and the stranger” where we read,
They slay the widow and the stranger, and murder the fatherless.
The verse begins, “They slay the widow and the stranger, ...” The Psalmist began with the words, “they slay the widow” or “they, the wicked, kill, murder and destroy the woman whose husband had died” “and the stranger” which means “and the sojourner, temporary inhabitant, newcomer and foreigners in Israel”. The Psalmist said the wicked people not only kill and destroy “widows”, but also “foreigners and temporary inhabitants” in their land.
The verse goes on to say, “... and murder the fatherless.” The Psalmist continued with the words, “and murder” or “and kill, slay and assassinate in a premeditated manner” “the fatherless” which means “the bereaved orphans”. The Psalmist said the wicked people also killed orphans in a premeditated way.
When meditate upon the words in this verse, we see discover how the Psalmist continued to share examples of how the wicked were behaving in his country. They killed “widows” and foreigners, and they assassinated orphans in a premeditated manner. This list of wickedness seems to get worse and worse, and for the Psalmist, it seemed that God was allowing it without retribution. God, however, knew what was happening even as He knows the sins of mankind today. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and “whosoever believes in Him, should not perish, but will have everlasting life”. (See John 3:16) Let us remember, God knows, God sees and God will judge, but He allows time for people to humble themselves, repent of their sins and receive His Son Jesus into their lives before He does so.
Next time the Psalmist shares how the enemies of Jehovah God, “say, The LORD shall not see”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
