The LORD Comes to Judge the Earth - Psalms 98:9

In Psalms ninety-eight the Psalmist said, “Let the sea roar, and the fullness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. Let the floods clap their hands: let the hills be joyful together”, and in chapter ninety-eight and verse nine of Psalms the Psalmist said, “Before the LORD; for he comes to judge the earth” where we read,

Before the LORD; for he comes to judge the earth:

with righteousness shall he judge the world, and the people with equity.

The verse begins, Before the LORD; for he comes to judge the earth: The Psalmist began with the words, “before the LORD” or “in front and in the face and countenance of Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God”; “for he comes” which means “because, since and on account that he, Jehovah God, enters, arrives and is enumerated” “to judge the earth” or “to vindicate, punish and act as law-giver or governor over the land, ground, country, territory, region and world”. The Psalmist said the “sea, people, floods and hills” were to give praise and honor to Jehovah God because He shall enter the world to vindicate, act as law-giver and govern over the “earth”.

The verse goes on to say, with righteousness shall he judge the world, and the people with equity. The Psalmist continued with the words, “with righteousness” or “by the use of justice, rightness, deliverance, victory and prosperity” “shall he judge the world” which means “will he, Jehovah God, vindicate, punish and act as law-giver or governor”, “and the people” or “and the human beings whether male or female” “with equity” which means “by the use of evenness, uprightness and straightness”. The Psalmist said Jehovah God would bring “judgment” upon the world and the people within it according to His uprightness and straightness.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn why the Psalmist wanted people and nature to give praise, honor and glory to Jehovah God. God will indeed come to the world and “judge” it, and everyone shall give an account for what they have done in their bodies. (See Matthew 12:36-37) Jesus came to the world to die for the sins of all mankind, and when we believe in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life with God and help us to understand that all our “judgment” was place upon Him at the cross. (See 1 Peter 2:24) God loves us, and when we give Him honor and praise for His salvation through His Son Jesus Christ, we align with His purpose and plan to come and judge the world and everyone within it.

Next time we begin a new chapter and see the Psalmist say, “the LORD reigns”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
