A Fire Goes Before God - Psalms 97:3

In Psalms ninety-seven the Psalmist said, “The LORD reigns; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of isles be glad thereof. Clouds and darkness are round about him: righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne”, and in chapter ninety-seven and verse three of Psalms the Psalmist said, “a fire goes before him” where we read,

A fire goes before him, and burns up his enemies round about.

The verse begins, “A fire goes before him, ...” The Psalmist began with the words, “a fire” or “fiery hot flames” “goes before him” which means “walks, departs, proceeds and moves in front, in the presence and countenance of him, Jehovah God”. The Psalmist said a fiery hot flames proceeds in front of Jehovah God.

The verse continues, “... and burns up his enemies round about.” The Psalmist added the words, “and burns up” or “and blazes, scorches, kindles and sets on fire” “his enemies” which means “his, Jehovah God's, hating foes and adversaries” “round about” or “in a circuit and surrounding Jehovah God”. The Psalmist said the “fiery flames” would scorch and kindle fires upon the hating foes and adversaries of Jehovah God.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist shared about the fiery flames that proceed the presence of Jehovah God which consume and devour His hating foes and adversaries from all directions. No one is more powerful than Jehovah God, and He wants to be our provision and protection for all eternity. Access to this relationship comes through believing and trusting in His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we surrender to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and allow us to watch His consuming fiery fire destroy all of His hating foes and ours.
