In Psalms ninety-four the Psalmist said, “O LORD God, to whom vengeance belongs. O God, to whom vengeance belongs, show yourself”, and in chapter ninety-four and verse two of Psalms the Psalmist said, “Lift up yourself, you judge of the earth” where we read,
Lift up yourself, you judge of the earth: render a reward to the proud.
The verse begins, “Lift up yourself, you judge of the earth:” The Psalmist began with the words, “lift up yourself” or “bear up, carry, support, sustain and endure your own self”, “you judge of the earth” which means “you, Jehovah God, governor, vindicator, punisher and law-giver belonging to the land, country, region, territory, district and world”. The Psalmist called upon Jehovah God to support and sustain Himself because He is the governor, vindicator and law-giver of the world.
The verse continues, “render a reward to the proud.” The Psalmist added the words, “render a reward” or “return, relinquish and give payment” “to the proud” which means “toward people who are arrogant and lofty”. The Psalmist beckoned Jehovah God to return and give payment to people who are lofty and prideful.
When consider the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist wanted Jehovah God to take vengeance upon people who were acting arrogantly and proudly. God is the Divine judge and ruler of the world, and He provided His law in the ten commandments found in Exodus chapter twenty and Deuteronomy chapter five. He is able to judge in a righteous manner, and anyone who violates His law is a “sinner”. In other words, they miss God's mark of perfection. “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (See Romans 6:23), and when we believe and trust in Jesus who died on the cross to pay for our errors, mistakes and wrongs, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and become our avenger to anyone who opposes Him and us.
Next time the Psalmist asks, “how long shall the wicked triumph?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
