In Psalms ninety-four the Psalmist asked, “Understand, you brutish among the people: and you fools, when will you be wise? He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? he that formed the eye, shall he not see?”, and in chapter ninety-four and verse ten of Psalms the Psalmist asked, “He that chastens the heathen, shall not he correct?” where we read,
He that chastens the heathen, shall not he correct?
he that teaches man knowledge, shall not he know?
The verse begins, “He that chastens the heathen, shall not he correct?” The Psalmist began with the words, “He that chastens the heathen” or “He, Jehovah God, who disciplines, instructs and admonishes people who are usually unbelievers who are non-Hebrew, foreign and Gentile nations”, “shall he not correct” which means “will he, Jehovah God, in no way or manner judge, decide, rebuke, reprove and convict”? The Psalmist questioned whether Jehovah God who disciplines and admonishes unbelieving Gentile nations would in no way rebuke and reprove the “brutish among the people”.
The verse goes on to say, “he that teaches man knowledge, shall not he know?” The Psalmist continued with the words, “he that teaches man knowledge” or “he, Jehovah God, who instructs, exercises and trains people both male and female in perception, skill, discernment, understanding and wisdom”, “shall he not know” which means “will he, Jehovah God, in no way or manner understand, perceive, notice and discern”? The Psalmist asked whether Jehovah God who instructs people in understanding and wisdom would have knowledge of what the “brutish among the people” do.
When think through the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist in a rhetorical manner asked whether Jehovah God would not reprove and correct people who perform wicked deeds, and whether He is aware of what they do. God knows everything, and there is nothing that escapes His knowledge. He gives instruction because He knows, and He guides into wisdom because He knows how to be wise. He sees every sin, error, wrong and mistake that people commit, and our sins separate us from a personal relationship with this Holy God. God knew this, and that is why He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we receive Jesus as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and instruct us in His ways of knowledge and wisdom. There is no better teacher than God, and we are wise when we learn from Him and not be as those who will not listen to and obey His instruction.
Next time the Psalmist says, “the LORD knows the thoughts of man”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
