The Old Wine is Better - Luke 5:39

The beloved physician Luke shared how Jesus, “spake also a parable unto” the scribes and Pharisees and said, “No man puts a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new makes a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agrees not with the old. And no man puts new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish. But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved”, and in chapter five and verse thirty-nine of his book Luke shares how Jesus speaking of drinking wine said, “the old is better” where we read:

No man also having drunk old wine straightway desires new: for he says, The old is better.

The verse reads,No man also having drunk old wine straightway desires new: Luke began with the words, “no man also having drunk old wine” or “not one person whether male or female who drinks ancient, aged and not recent fruit of the vine” “straightway desires new” which means “immediately and forthwith has in mind, intends, resolves, determines and purposes to drink the younger, more recent and fresh wine”. Luke shared how Jesus said people who “drink” of the “aged” wine do not want the wine that is “freshly made”.

The verse continues, for he says, The old is better. Luke added the words, “for he says” which means “because, since and on account that the person drinking utters, declares and proclaims”, “the old is better” or “the ancient, aged and not recent fruit of the vine is pleasant, easier to drink and superior tasting”. Luke shared how Jesus said the person who drinks the “aged wine” declares it to be superior to that which was “recently made”.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus referred to the “better” wine as the preferred choice among those who drink wine. Those who have tasted the “aged” wine are usually resistant to wanting the “freshly made”. The idea is that although both “wines” are valid, the ones who have tasted of the “old” are satisfied with it, and they desire nothing else. God loves people, and down through the years He has employed many methods by which He draws people to Himself. God sent His Son Jesus to the world to be the “Messiah”, and those who believe and trust in Him as their “Savior and Lord” will have “tasted” the best “wine” they shall ever have.

Next time we begin a new chapter and see Luke shares how Jesus goes through “a corn field” “on the second sabbath after the first”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
