Fear Not: Believe Only - Luke 8:50

The beloved physician Luke wrote how, “there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at Jesus' feet, and besought him that he would come into his house. For he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a dying. But as he went the people thronged him. And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any, came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched. And Jesus said, Who touched me? When all denied, Peter and they that were with him said, Master, the multitude throng you and press you, and say you, Who touched me? And Jesus said, Somebody has touched me: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me. And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately. And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: your faith has made you whole; go in peace. And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: your faith has made you whole; go in peace. While he yet spoke, there came one from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying to him, Your daughter is dead; trouble not the Master”, and in chapter eight and verse fifty of his book Luke shared, “when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not” where we read:

But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying,

Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole.

The verse reads, “But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, ... Luke began with the words, “but when” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover at the time and moment” “Jesus heard it” which means “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate perceived, understood and discerned what the people from Jairus' house told him”, “he answered him” or “Jesus responded and began to speak to Jairus”, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” the following words. Luke shared how Jesus “heard” what the people from Jairus' house told him, and He began to speak the following words to him.

The verse continues, “Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole.” Luke added the words, “fear not” which means “do not be afraid, filled with terror or put to flight”: “believe only” or “think to be true, be persuaded of, place confidence in and have confidence alone”, “and she shall be made whole” which means “and Jairus', your daughter, will be kept safe, sound, preserved from suffering, made well, healed and restored to health”. Luke shared how Jesus told Jairus not to “be afraid” but rather to “trust and have confidence” and his “daughter” would be made well and restored to health.

When we mediate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see Jesus' response to the “bad report” from the people within Jairus' home. They knew Jairus' daughter was dead, but Jesus knew differently. Jesus encouraged Jairus not to “be afraid” but rather “trust and have confidence” in Him because his “daughter” would be healed. God knows every circumstance in which people find themselves, and though the outcome appears bleak, He is able to overcome whatever enters a believer's life. God loves people, and when they believe and trust in His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they can be assured that He will be with them in everything they face.

Next time Luke shares when Jesus, “came into the house, he suffered no man to go in”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
