Your Daughter is Dead - Luke 8:49

The beloved physician Luke wrote how, “there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at Jesus' feet, and besought him that he would come into his house. For he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a dying. But as he went the people thronged him. And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any, came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched. And Jesus said, Who touched me? When all denied, Peter and they that were with him said, Master, the multitude throng you and press you, and say you, Who touched me? And Jesus said, Somebody has touched me: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me. And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately. And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: your faith has made you whole; go in peace. And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: your faith has made you whole; go in peace”, and in chapter eight and verse forty-nine of his book Luke shared how, “one came from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying to him, saying to him, your daughter is dead” where we read:

While he yet spoke, there came one from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying to him,

Your daughter is dead; trouble not the Master.

The verse reads, “While he yet spoke, there came one from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying to him, ... Luke began with the words, “while he yet spoke” or “during the moment Jesus was speaking to the woman concerning her faith”, “there came one” which means “there arose and appeared someone” “ from the ruler of the synagogue's house” or “from the dwelling place and abode of the religious leader and teacher Jairus”, “saying to him” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming the following words to Jairus”. Luke shared even as Jesus was talking to the woman someone from Jairus' house came declaring the following words to him.

The verse goes on to say, “Your daughter is dead; trouble not the Master.” Luke continued with the words, “your daughter is dead” which means “Jairus' female offspring and progeny is lifeless, without breath and inanimate”; “trouble not the Master” or “do not vex, annoy or harass the teacher”. Luke shared how the messengers from Jairus' house told him there was no reason to “vex” the “teacher” any longer because his “daughter” died.

When we mediate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn of the bad news Jairus' house members brought to him about his daughter. Though Jairus sent for Jesus, it appeared that he was too late. Jesus had a plan, and because this daughter was twelve and the woman had her issue of blood for twelve years, the healing of the woman could demonstrate Jesus' power to Jairus. God does not always do things the way people desire for Him to do, however, He, like Jesus, has a plan, and He is going to work it out. Those who are wise will yield their lives to Jesus not just for what He does, but also for who He is in every situation.

Next time Luke shares, “when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
