John the apostle wrote how Jesus, “came to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour. There came a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus said unto her, Give me to drink. (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.) Then said the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that you, being a Jew, ask drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. Jesus answered and said unto her, If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that said to you, Give me to drink; you would have asked of him, and he would have given you living water. The woman said unto him, Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from where then have you that living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle? Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinks of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. The woman said unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come here to draw”, and in chapter four and verse sixteen of his book, John shared how Jesus said to the woman, “Go, call your husband” where we read:
Jesus said unto her, Go, call your husband, and come here.
The verse reads, “Jesus said unto her, ...” John began with the words, “Jesus said” or “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto her” which means “ to the woman from Samaria”. John shared how Jesus began to respond to the “Samaritan woman's” request of Jesus to give her “the water” about which He spoke.
The verse continues, “... Go, call your husband, and come here.”. John added the words, “Go” which means “depart and withdraw from here”, “call your husband” or “speak to, summon and invite your, the Samaritan woman's own male spouse”, “and come here” which means “and arise and appear in this location”. John shared how Jesus instructed the “woman” from “Samaria” to depart from Him and “summon” her “husband” to join Him at the “well”.
When we think through John's words in this verse, we see how Jesus began to instruct the “Samaritan woman” as to how she would obtain the “living water” of which He spoke. Jesus was touching upon a particular situation in this “woman's” life, and He knows where to address everyone who desires to have the “living water” He offers. Jesus came to provide forgiveness of sins and everlasting life to everyone who puts their “faith and trust” in Him. Those who are wise will ask the Lord Jesus for His “living water” and carefully attend to whatever He speaks to their heart to retrieve.
Next time John shares how the woman answers Jesus, “I have no husband”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
