John the apostle wrote how Jesus told the “Samaritan woman” at the well, “Whosoever drinks of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. The woman said unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come here to draw. Jesus said unto her, Go, call your husband, and come here”, and in chapter four and verse seventeen of his book, John shared how the woman answered Jesus, “I have no husband” where we read:
The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her,
you have well said, I have no husband:
The verse reads, “The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, ...” John began with the words, “The woman answered and said” or “the female human being responded and began to speak and uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “I have no husband” which means “I, the woman from Samaria, do not have a male spouse”. “Jesus said unto her” or “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation uttered, declared and proclaimed to the woman” the following words. John shared how the “Samaritan woman” told Jesus she did not have “a husband”, and Jesus responded to her with the following words.
The verse goes on to say, “... you have well said, I have no husband:”. John continued with the words, “you have well said” which means “you, Samaritan woman, have answered, brought a good word and told correctly”, “I have no husband” or “I, the Samaritan woman, do not have a male spouse”. John shared how Jesus confirmed the woman's statement about not having a “husband”.
When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how the “Samaritan woman” told Jesus she did not have a “husband”, and Jesus confirmed what she said. Jesus knew in advance this “woman” did not have a “husband”, but He asked her anyway. This gave her an opportunity to disclose her “error”, and for any person to have a relationship with God through His Son Jesus, they must admit their “sins, errors and wrongs”. In other words, they must humble themselves before Jesus and ask Him to forgive their sins and grant them everlasting life. Jesus began to give this woman “living water” by addressing her need, and He does the same with every person who desires to have a relationship with Him. Let all who read these words allow Jesus to ask them to retrieve whatever is keeping them from yielding their life to Him.
Next time John shares how Jesus tells the woman, “you have had five husbands”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
